Traveling can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Over the years, I’ve curated a list of must-haves that ensure my trips are smooth and hassle-free.
My top essentials for any journey:
Tech and Gadgets

- A Great Multi-Plug: I’m currently using a HulGO Volt adapter that I got from Amazon ages ago. It has both USB and USB-C outlets – just enough for all of my bits and pieces. It’s compact and allows me to charge all my gadgets simultaneously, making it perfect for international travel where outlet availability can be limited.
- A Charged External Battery: Having an external battery ensures you’re never left without power, a lifesaver for those moments when you can’t find an outlet. I have an Anker battery (mine is an older version of the one I’ve linked to) and it’s been great – I use it all the time and not just for travel.
- AirPods Pro: I don’t go anywhere without my Airpods (generally!). These have been great for travelling because they’re comfortable and compact.
- Portable Steamer: I wouldn’t recommend this for general travel, but it was essential for us on a recent trip. My husband worked remotely most of the time, but ended up spending about three weeks in various offices. In anticipation for needing to dress professionally, we brought a steamer, and we absolutely used it.
Connectivity and Entertainment

- Netflix App with Downloaded Episodes: Long flights can be tedious, but having the Netflix app with your favorite episodes downloaded can make all the difference. It’s a great way to pass the time and keep yourself entertained without relying on in-flight entertainment or internet connectivity. Personally, I’ve been binge-watching a lot of Korean TV shows lately. Having a captivating series at my fingertips ensures that the hours fly by, making my journey much more enjoyable.
- Airalo eSIM: Purchase data plans for various countries, ensuring you have internet access without the hassle of swapping out physical SIM cards. I have an international plan with my UK provider, but it doesn’t cover all countries. I’ve used Airalo in Brazil and Turkey and it’s been fantastic. Easy to install and very reasonably priced.
Money and Security

- Western Union App: Reliable for sending and receiving money internationally, ensuring you have access to funds no matter where you are. This was essential in Argentina when I was there in early 2024.
- A Bit of Cash: I learned the hard way to always carry at least a bit of actual cash as a backup. This can be a lifesaver in unexpected situations where cards aren’t accepted or ATMs aren’t available (or in my case, where the machine ate my debit card!). Even though I use ApplePay for almost everything these days, I now carry £100 as a back up just in case I need it.
Comfort and Convenience

- Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is essential when traveling. By bringing your own reusable bottle and avoiding single-use plastic bottles, you’re reducing your environmental footprint. We quite like Klean Kanteen.
- Mini First Aid Kit: Having this means you’re prepared for handling minor injuries and ailments on the go. Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications. I wouldn’t typically bring this on all trips, but I definitely do when I know we’ll be hiking.
- Lip Balm: Keep your lips moisturized and protected with lip balm, essential for preventing dry, chapped lips during travel. Flights can be dehydrating so I always have lip balm with me. Currently I’m using Brazilian Kiss – it’s pricey, but I really like it because it doesn’t make me feel like I constantly need to put more on.
- Silk Eye Mask: Ensure you get quality sleep by blocking out light with a soft, comfortable silk eye mask. They’re incredibly lightweight too, so will hardly impact on your luggage weight allowance.
Packing and Organization

- Compression Packing Cubes: Save space in your luggage and keep your belongings organized. We just use basic ones from Amazon – you don’t need anything fancy.
- Travel-Size Laundry Detergent: Allows you to wash your clothes in your hotel sink or bathtub. The per item price for laundry at a hotel is usually pretty steep, so I prefer to hand wash items. This came in handy when we were on safari because we weren’t in a position to find a local laundromat!
