Wellington, New Zealand:
After graduating university with a Bachelor of Arts and moving to San Diego, I found myself in a transition phase. I was selling mattresses while contemplating my next steps. One fateful day, two girls walked into my shop and shared their incredible experience. They had just returned from spending a year working abroad in New Zealand. Intrigued, I quickly turned to Google Images, and what I saw captivated me. The lush landscapes, vibrant cities, and adventure-filled scenery sparked a desire in me to embark on a journey that would change my life.
Taking the Leap
With no clear career path and a strong desire for adventure, I decided to apply for a working holiday visa in New Zealand. I managed to convince two of my friends to join me. However, as the departure date approached and reality set in, they both backed out. Despite this, I chose to move forward with my plans, driven by an excitement I couldn’t ignore. Boarding that plane alone was a leap of faith that changed the course of my life. The next three years would define who I am today.
A Solo Journey Begins
I landed in New Zealand with $2000 USD, knowing no one, but filled with a sense of possibility. Initially, I planned to settle in Auckland and even paid a month’s rent for accommodation there. But from the moment I set foot in Wellington I was hooked. The city’s vibrant energy and charm were irresistible. So I packed my bags and moved to Wellington, where I found an amazing flat in the heart of the town with flatmates who quickly became lifelong friends.

Finding My Footing
With no job lined up, I began looking for temporary work and soon found roles as a secretary and personal assistant. This led to an administrative position at the Office of the Auditor General of New Zealand, a role that became my home for the next two years. They even sponsored my visa, allowing me to stay longer.
Personal Growth and Independence
Living in a new country by myself forced me to make decisions on my own without input from others. I became more confident and decisive, learning to trust my instincts and handle challenges independently. Meeting people from diverse walks of life and cultures broadened my perspectives and made me more open-minded. My love of adventure and desire to explore the world truly began with this experience.
Love and Exploration
During my time in Wellington, I unknowingly met the man who would become my husband. Together, we explored the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand, uncovering countless adventures. From the stunning fjords to the serene beaches, every corner of the country offered new wonders. Our shared love for travel later took us to Southeast Asia and eventually to the United Kingdom.

New Zealand: My Second Home
Although I no longer live in New Zealand, I consider it my second home. My in-laws are there, and I have cherished memories of personal and professional growth from my three years in this incredible country. New Zealand is also where my husband and I chose to get married, further solidifying its special place in our hearts. The wedding was a beautiful celebration surrounded by the stunning landscapes that had brought us together and the friends we had made along the way.

Moving to New Zealand was a defining moment in my life, marking the beginning of my world travels and the many adventures that followed. It’s where I grew, learned, and fell in love with both the land and a partner to share my journey. New Zealand will always hold a special place in my heart, because it’s the place where a young California girl found adventure, love, and a sense of belonging in a foreign land.
